I cannot understood how Christians can advocate relying on the state to meet our obligation to our fellow man. I'm no biblical scholar, but I don't see that anywhere in the gospel - quite the opposite in fact: "Give to Casear what is Casear's, and to God what is God's"." That doesn't look to me like Jesus thought taxes were good for much - just something you had to bear for living in this world. God's work is completely unrelated to Caesar's - at least, that's how I read it.
