Earlier this year, Ohio expanded its SCHIP eligibility to cover kids between 200% and 300% of the federal poverty level. Now they are concerned that the President's veto of SCHIP legislation may mean federal money won't be available to help fund this expansion. As the state's House minority leader put it:
"Ohio passed a near-unanimous budget with this brand of health care expansion for our own children intact. And yet, President Bush calls this proposal to cover millions of our kids 'irresponsible.' What's irresponsible is his veto of this critical funding that gets to the heart of one of our biggest issues: protecting our children."
So the legislature passed an expansion of a government program without knowing whether or not the federal government would dramatically increase spending to help pay for it? And it's President Bush who is "irresponsible"? Well, I guess since the Ohio General Assembly was "protecting our children" then their activities shouldn't be scrutinized too closely. As long as their intentions were noble then they should get a free pass, huh?
