Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has been traveling around the state for the past week or so trying to drum up support for his plan to raise taxes. Part of these new taxes would expand Medicaid. According to the governor's website, this is needed because "87% of Marylanders living with a working adult are uninsured..."
I know this is more than likely the result of sloppy staff work. I'm sure the governor's website means to say "87% of the uninsured live with a working adult." But this type of sloppiness is indicative of the way O'Malley is promoting his plan. He has already lined up the Democrats in the General Assembly behind it, and in a state like Maryland that's all you need. He has released few details of the package to the public. O'Malley prefers to spout platitudes about "covering the kids" and making the tax code more "progressive" to actually laying out details of how to do. It seems the plan already has enough legislative support to become law, however, so I guess O'Malley doesn't have to let the public know the nitty gritty or even get basic facts about the uninsured right.
