When you hear the words "special session," it's usually a prelude to your wallet getting lighter. But in Florida these days, it means that state government is not raising taxes, but cutting spending.
Legislators have a target of $1.1 billion to cut. That sounds like a lot, but it's less than 2 percent of the budget of $71.1 billion.
Neither chamber of the legislature seems to be on the right rack: the House wants to exempt K-12 entirely. Is every dollar in the K-12 budget worth more to the state that every other dollar in other parts of the budget? Meanwhile, the Senate prefers across-the-board cuts. While that gets the job done, it doesn't allow for cutting back on less useful programs in favor of ones that are working.
