Changes to SCHIP Regulations Won't Hurt Minnesota

It's true that SCHIP in Minnesota funds far more adult parents (35,000) than children (5,000). However, don't blame Minnesota. Blame SCHIP regulations. SCHIP funding could not be used to fund children previously covered by Medicaid and Minnesota already covered kids up to 275 percent of federal poverty guidelines. Consequently, Minnesota had only two ways to access their SCHIP alottment: 1) Expand to kids above 275 percent of FPG or 2) use the money for adults. Minnesota wisely focused the money on low-income adult populations below 200 percent of FPG.
If we're going to have yet another taxpayer expenditure on health programs ... not saying it's a good thing, but if we are ... simple honesty would suggest that public officials actually try to make it reach the intended audience rather than somebody else. Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but aren't significant numbers of Minnesotans in SCHIP--the CHILDREN'S health insurance program--not children at all?
