We'll Destroy Your Job? No Big Deal!

Looking for work?
"'I'm assuming anyone as obviously brilliant as you could find something else to market,' the First Lady said."

That "First Lady" was Hillary Clinton. The quote is pulled from a Wall Street Journal story from November 17, 1993.

The story is about a health insurance agent, Lori Proctor, who personally asked the First Lady what would happen to health insurance agents (about 150,000 at the time, according to the Journal) if the Clinton health plan were to become law.

The First Lady's response reminds me a little of old Ebenezer Scrooge's when asked about the poor: "'Are there no prisons?' asked Scrooge. . . And the Union workhouses?' demanded Scrooge. 'Are they still in operation?'"

Yes, hundreds of thousands health insurance agents would likely be able to find a different job if the government takes over. But who would provide consumers with information about their health insurance options? Oh, that's right, there won't be any options!

On the other hand, maybe those agents will respond by saying to the vote-seeking senator-turned- presidential candidate, "I'm assuming anyone as obviously brilliant as you could find something else to market."
