Eye on Pork

Buckeye Institute offers new feature

Filed As:  Budget and Tax

The Buckeye Institute, an Ohio-based organization, has an eye for pork. Its Eye on the State House project casts a critical eye on state spending priorities. The Porker of the Week feature gives examples of wasteful and ineffective spending. The latest Porker goes to a lobbyist for the teachers union, who argues that charter schools are ineffective. Given the flight of thousands of Ohio children to charter schools, the lobbyist's cause is an example of wasteful spending.

But don't lose heart, Ohioans. The Buckeye Institute folks also work to identify the Pistol of the Week, a person who has shown prudence in spending public money. Past recipients of the award have called attention to patronage, employment fraud in the state workforce, and have done battle with the "give me more" mentality of state universities.
