Waiting for a Charter School

By John LaPlante

Some states make a great use of charter schools, while others place many restrictions on these schools, which are the leading form of school choice.

The most dramatic restriction is a cap on the number of charter schools in the state. Texas, for example, has a cap. As a result, over 17,000 students are waiting for a space in a charter school.

Michael Quinn Sullivan, of Empower Texans, has a 5-minute video that discusses the charter school situation in Texas.

Meanwhile, 13,000 students in Illinois are waiting for a charter school as well. They, too, have been shut out because of a cap on schools. The Illinois Policy Institute reports.
