A Voucher Proposal for Georgia

By John LaPlante

Filed As:  Education (k-12)

Georgia's senate president pro tem would like the state to carry out an ambitious voucher program for K-12 education.

Eric Johnson says "Georgia really has legitimately moved to the forefront nationally" on school choice.

He plans to offer legislation in the next session to shift some education funding, so that every willing student gets $5,000 for use at any school. That's roughly what the state contributes to a child's education each year.

Johnson says that the average private school tuition is $5,800, meaning that the voucher would go a long ways towards helping families exercise true choice.

The news account closes with a quote from a public school parent who says that she would decline the offer--grounding her position on the myth that public schools are more diverse than private ones.
