Government-run health care will be on the ballot in another location this year: Dane County, Wisconsin. The county board of supervisors has decided to put on the ballot an advisory question that calls for "universal" health care.
The ballot language is ""Shall the next state Legislature enact health care reform legislation by December 31, 2009, that guarantees every Wisconsin resident affordable health care coverage with benefits that are substantially similar to those provided to state legislators?"
The news account reflects the myths of government health-care advocates including:
* Non-profit and not-for-profit hospitals provide "the most ethical care."
* Medicare "is a great example of what universal health care can look like, including 4 percent administrative costs."
* Government-run health care is a moral right.
Dane County is sometimes known as "25 square miles surrounded by reality," and as the home to both the University of Wisconsin and the state capitol, it isn't reflective of the rest of the state--though one could say that it reflects the populist history of the state.
