Georgia Passes Statewide Video Franchising

Limits PEG channels, caps franchise fees

Filed As:  Communication technologies

The Georgia Legislature has passed a strong Statewide Video Franchising law (HB 227). The bill passed the Senate by a 52-2 vote and the House by a 146-0 vote.

The bill contains no build out or net neutrality requirements, allows cable companies to opt in immediately, caps franchise fees at no more than 5%, limits the number of PEG channels and eliminates the requirement that video providers provide any production assistance for PEG channels.

Georgia deregulated all broadband, VoIP and wireless services in 2006.
