Foolish thinking about international trade is certainly not limited to the federal level. State politicians can get caught up in it too, as Richard Burr notes for the Detroit News.
Michigan, with its ongoing one-state recession and dependence on an industry (automobile manufacturing) subject to intense international competition, may be especially prone to protectionism. But bad policy takes many forms, as we see throughout the states.
