Nebraska Says "No Sex for You!"

By John LaPlante

Filed As:  Health Care

The state of Nebraska is going to stop some sex-related spending. No, I'm not talking about dirty art here. I mean Medicaid.

The Lincoln Journal Star quotes Vivianne Chaumont, the state's director of Medicaid: "Medicaid is meant to pay for the medical necessities of needy people and 'sex is not medically necessary,' she said."

The ensuing controversy brings up questions of gender equity (read the story and comments and you'll see discussion of coverage for breast reconstruction and contraceptives) and shows the perils of relying on a politically-driven program.
