Drink! The Public Good Depends on It

By John LaPlante

It should be way too early in the morning to even talk about having a drink, but the Commonwealth Foundation says that at least one legislator in Pennsylvania wants state government to divest itself of liquor stores.

The legacy of Prohibition, laws on the distribution of alcoholic beverages are among the most bizarre in the country.

My vote for the most unusual, so far, is the law and practice of New Hampshire. There, at least some highway rest areas double as locations of state-owned liquor stores.

So how does that square with "don't drink and drive?"
