Insurance-Lite in Florida

By John LaPlante

Filed As:  Health Care

Today's lead editorial in the Wall Street Journal offers a favorable review of some recent legislative developments in Florida, which were mentioned previously in this space.

The value of the plan, says the Journal, is that "It nudges the government out of the health-care marketplace" through allowing insurance companies "to sell stripped-down, no-frills policies exempted from the more than 50 mandates that Florida otherwise imposes, including for acupuncture and chiropractics."

Given the recent willingness of the state's leaders to use government to, in effect, offer a single-payer plan for storm insurance, this is indeed good news.

For a less a less optimistic take, see the recent comments by John R. Graham, who says that Florida "fumbles a fine opportunity."
