Promoting the Slacker Mandate in Maryland

By Marc Kilmer

Filed As:  Health Care

Using a high school commencement rehearsal as his platform, a Maryland Democratic legislator reminded students that the General Assembly acted to raise the cost of insurance in the state. Whoops. No, he actually said this:

"We need universal health care, but the state has acted to increase the numbers of Marylanders with access to medical insurance."

He is talking about the "Slacker Mandate," the trendiest of state mandates today. Since the young are over-represented among the uninsured, then those enamored with Big Government see an easy answer in mandating that insurance companies cover these "kids" up to 25 or 30 years of age. Of course, there is no talk about allowing innovation or freedom in the individual or small group market so insurers can design plans that appeal to these youths.
