Is Anyone Looking Out for Themselves?

As a winter sports enthusiast, I know that injuries can happen, whether you're skiing, snowboarding, or ... sledding. Perhaps that's why I was a bit surprised when I read this account from Sioux Falls, South Dakota about a situation at a city-owned park.

The city's park and recreation department ran a sledding hill during the winter, and not surprisingly, a few people got hurt. What is surprising is the expectation, expressed in the article, that "the government ought to have someone there to make sure that nobody does get hurt."

Sorry. Can't happen. Think of our roadways, for example, which are patrolled by law enforcement and maintained by small armies of public works employees. Yet bad things happen. That's why there's called "accidents."

Exercise prudent judgement? Yes. offer a modicum of order. Sure. But prevent all bad things from happening? Nobody can do that.
