Excellent discussion. We can talk about the economics of health care all day long--and that's important--but the moral questions that drive some people to embrace single-payer systems must also be addressed head-on.

By the way, it's not unusual for me to see appeals (usually in small-town restaurants) for funds to pay for so-and-so's cancer treatment or whatever. Others may see that as a failure of "not having a single-payer system." I see that as a sign of a sign that moral principles are still observed.
