Preschool for All?

Having failed old children, they want younger ones

One current fad in K-12 education these days is to expand it to E-12 education. In this case "E" stands for early--in some cases, even under 12 months old.

Several organizations that are members of State Policy Network have in recent months responded to this fad. Here are some of the most recent reports:

Plato’s Republic On The Plains: Should Kansas Really Embrace State-Financed Early Childhood Education? (PDF), from the Flint Hills Center for Public Policy

Should Alabama create a universal pre-K program? (PDF) from the Alabama Policy Institute

Do Small Kids Need Big Government? (PDF) from the Texas Public Policy Foundation

Early Learning Proposals in Washington State from the Washington Policy Council

The renewed push for universal preschool is a perfect example of the logic of government: when a program (in this case, K-12 education) isn't living up to expectations, don't introduce structural reforms (e.g., school choice). Instead, make it bigger and expand the size and scope of government.
