How's that Public School Working out for Taxpayers?

A new mapping tool gives graduation rates

Filed As:  Education (k-12)

Even though a high school diploma doesn't mean much these days, it's still better to have one than not--and when schools don't graduate a significant portion of their students on time, that's a problem.

If you'd like to see just how well (or poorly) a job your local school district is doing, head over to Education Week and use their Graduation Rate Mapping Tool. Rates are color-coded according to the percentage of student who enter ninth grade and then complete a diploma within four years.

It's the same methodology used by the report Cities in Crisis, which gathered a lot of news earlier this month when the group America's Promise Alliance released the report Cities in Crisis. That report said that the overall graduation rate in the country is 70 percent, while in cities it's a 50/50 chance that a new high school student will graduate in time.
