Raise Taxes or Curtail Services = False Dichotomy

By Paul Gessing

Filed As:  Health Care

Although this editorial from the Atlanta Journal Constitution includes many solid points on the need to rein in the runaway costs of Medicare and Medicaid, it also plays into the false dichotomy that we have to raise taxes or cut services in order to solve our health care problems.

Of course, if we continue to stick with inefficient, government-run health care programs, that may be the case, but the concept of market-driven reforms is too easily dismissed. Yes, the government must curtail services in order to avoid a future budget crisis, but left to their own devices and given the proper incentives, Americans will operate successfullly enough in the marketplace to improve their health while cutting costs.
