Saved by the Midwife

Katrina really hasn't registered on our national radar screen much has it?

Women were giving birth in the Superdome unassisted, as well as in other shelters and outdoors and in houses without medical personnel trained specifically in out of hospital birth. By incorporating Certified Professional Midwives into first responder plans, a midwife may register with the state and carry additional identification to respond to a disaster and be allowed inside the perimeter or through check points.

Katrina was such a nightmare in the public health sector that whole Public Heath Programs are changing their focus of how to deliver "Evidence Based Public Health" in response to the horrendous situation.

Check out the University of Cincinnati's MPH program and look at the language.

By all means, midwifery should be legal.

The lay practice of midwifery should not be licensed or certified by the state.
