Ambitious Governors
Stateline.org offers up a running summary of state-of-the-state proposals as presented by the nation's governors. It's a pretty bleak list, if you think about it.
Among the low-lights:
- Significant increases in spending on K-12, without much reform (Alaska);
- Making electricity more expensive through renewable energy mandates (Arizona) and reducing electricty use by 15% (New York);
- Expanding government's role in health care (I lost track);
- Fingerprint every fourth-grade student in the state (Delaware);
- Forcibly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Delaware; Kansas);
- Introduce a slacker mandate for health insurance (Vermont);
- Introduce a government-funded and program of giving health screenings to all children (West Virginia)
Among the good ideas:
- Budget caps and other spending restrictions (California; Indiana; New Jersey; South Carolina);
- Eliminate certificate-of-need (CON) laws in Alaska;
- Eliminate "economic development" incentives limited to specific businesses (South Carolina);
- Phase out the personal property tax (Idaho);
- Privatize the state lottery (New York);
- Reduce property taxes (Georgia; Indiana) ;
It's going to be a long year.
