Ambitious Governors

Filed As:  General

Stateline.org offers up a running summary of state-of-the-state proposals as presented by the nation's governors. It's a pretty bleak list, if you think about it.

Among the low-lights:

  • Significant increases in spending on K-12, without much reform (Alaska);
  • Making electricity more expensive through renewable energy mandates (Arizona) and reducing electricty use by 15% (New York);
  • Expanding government's role in health care (I lost track);
  • Fingerprint every fourth-grade student in the state (Delaware);
  • Forcibly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Delaware; Kansas);
  • Introduce a slacker mandate for health insurance (Vermont);
  • Introduce a government-funded and program of giving health screenings to all children (West Virginia)

Among the good ideas:

  • Budget caps and other spending restrictions (California; Indiana; New Jersey; South Carolina);
  • Eliminate certificate-of-need (CON) laws in Alaska;
  • Eliminate "economic development" incentives limited to specific businesses (South Carolina);
  • Phase out the personal property tax (Idaho);
  • Privatize the state lottery (New York);
  • Reduce property taxes (Georgia; Indiana) ;

It's going to be a long year.
