Feds Reject I-80 Shell Game

Filed As:  Transportation

Don't blame the Commonwealth Foundation if it says "See, I told you so."

The foundation had suggested that Pennsylvania lease out the state's turnpike, operated by a state entity, to a commercial venture, and then use the lease proceeds to fix up roads and bridges.

Instead the state government decided to keep the turnpike under its control, and add tolls to Interstate 80.

Adding tolls requires the permission of the federal government--something that the foundation said might not happen.

Recently, the Federal Highway Administration has more or less denied permission, leaving the state to go back to the drawing board.

The Commonwealth Foundation offers some options, including leasing out the turnpike.
