Edspresso has a few comments on the expanding demand for charter schools--and one state board's reluctance to allow more of them.
One amazing fact is the disproportionate number of charter schools on a list of America's Best High Schools, put together by U.S. News and World Report . According to the Center for Education Reform: "Nearly 1,600 schools earned a place on the list. Of these, charters make up 15 percent of the top 20 schools and 4 percent of all schools on the list."
Charter schools make up 2 percent of all public schools in the U.S. They're not the only means of improving education, but they're a valuable part of the mix--and a demonstration of the value of competitive forces in education.
