Avoiding Grief by Not Offering Insurance

I am sad to say that I'm not surprised the majority of brokers did not even discuss HSAs with their clients: HSAs imply consumer-directed health plans, which have lower premiums. In California, I understand that all carriers except Kaiser Permanente pay commissions as a percentage of premium, not headcount. It's a brave and forward-thinking broker who will recommend an HSA-eligible policy under these circumstances, and I commend those who do!

What's to be done? More competition, please, like Merrill Matthews writes about it today's Wall Street Journal, by allowing individuals to buy health insurance across state lines, which will open up more Internet and 1-800 telephone competition.
